PURPOSE:To make a bearing absorb the vibration of a shaft supported by the bearing by making a shaft supporting pad movable, and weakening the supporting rigidity of the pad to change an oil film thickness when shaft vibration has increased. CONSTITUTION:When vibration occurs in a shaft 8, a detector sends a signal for the above-mentioned state to a control device 24, which operates directional control valves 20, 22 according to the vibration to move pistons 18a, 18b forward or backward. The inclination of a pad 6 caused by operating the piston 18a in such a way is utilized to operate the pad 6 for increase in the bearing capacity of an oil film to rise the shaft 8 when the shaft 8 has lowered, and for decrease in the bearing capacity of the oil film to lower the shaft 8 when the shaft has rised. Thus the vibrational energy of the shaft 8 can be absorbed.
