PURPOSE:To control a torque converter and lock-up at the time of starting a vehicle to the optimum by releasing a lock-up clutch in a zone in which gear ratio is the maximum while engaging the lock-up clutch nearly at the same time a speed change is started from the maximum gear ratio. CONSTITUTION:At the time of starting a vehicle with the maximum gear ratio, the torque amplifying action of a torque converter 12 is effected and, at the point of time when the torque converter 12 nearly enters a coupling zone at the start of speed change, a lock-up clutch 15 is engaged, smoothly shifting to a directly engaged zone. Thereby, both functions of a torque converter 12 and lock-up can be sufficiently utilized while coping with a shock through the simultaneous timing of the start of speed change and lock-up. |
