PURPOSE:To obtain a beta element optical switch by using a 3rd optical fiber for connection in addition to respectively two pieces of input and output optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:The ends, on one side, of the input optical fiber 1-1 and 1-2 and the optical fiber 3 are disposed in parallel at a spacing (d) and are arrayed by being fixed to a holder 4. The ends of the output optical fibers 2-1, 2-2 and another end of the fiber 3 are similarly constituted and are fixed to the holder 5. The fiber 1-1 is directly connected to 2-1 and the fiber 1-2 to 2-2 in the state in which the holder 4 is positioned with it side face in contact with a stopper 6-1. On the other hand, the fiber 1-1 is directly connected to 2-2 but the fiber 1-2 is connected via the fiber 3 to the fiber 2-1 when the holder 4 moves parallel by the distance (d) to the position where it side face comes into contact with a stopper 6-2. The straight.through state and crossover state of the beta element optical switch are thus attained. The parallel movement of the holder 4 is executed by magnets 9-1 and 9-2.
