PURPOSE:To utilize an emulsified compsn. as cosmetics or a lotion for external use to the skin by using a hydrolyzate of elastin having >=200,000mol.wt. so as to improve the emulsion stability, water and moisture retentivity of the compsn. CONSTITUTION:Elastin is enzymatically hydrolyzed to remove low mol.wt. matter and the resulting hydrolyzate having >=200,000mol.wt., preferably about 1-2 million average mol.wt. is added to an aq. phase by about 0.1-5wt.%, preferably about 1-10wt.%. Higher alcohol such as cetanol, higher fatty acid or other oily base is further added and emulsified to obtain an oil-in-water type or water-in-oil type emulsified compsn. A skin nutrient, perfume and a physiologically active substance may be added as required. The emulsified compsn. has more satisfactory water and moisture retentivity and emulsion stability than low mol.wt. elastin, does not irritate the skin and is applied with good feeling.
