PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which has the advantages of both a perpendicular magnetic recording medium and magneto-optical recording medium in combination by using a ferrite film having soft magnetism to form an intra-surface magnetized film. CONSTITUTION:The perpendicularly magnetized film as a 2nd layer 2 and the intra-surface magnetized film consisting of the ferrite having the soft magnetism as a reproducing layer 3 are successively laminated on a substrate 1. Recording is executed by utilizing the thermal effect of light generated by projection of laser light. On the other hand, reproduction is executed by detecting the leak magnetic field of the reproducing layer 3 subjected to the intra-surface magnetization by the residual magnetization component perpendicularly magnetically recorded on the recording layer 2 without the aid of a magneto-optical effect of low C/N, by means of a magnetic head. The magnetic recording medium which is increased in both the track density and recording density, is extremely suitable as a large-capacity memory, has the high reproduction C/N, shortens access time and has the advantages of both the perpendicular magnetic recording medium and the magneto-optical magnetic recording medium in combination is thereby obtd.
