PURPOSE:To register optional image data as a character pattern and to easily use it by registering image data read in from an image scanner as character patterns. CONSTITUTION:An operator sets a document where a character, a mark, and a figure, etc., to be register are drawn on the image scanner and presses the execution key of the keyboard to display an image (a) and a menu (b) of character sizes to be register below the image on a CRT. When the operator designates a character size in the menu on the keyboard, the frame (c) of the designated character size are displayed on the picture (a). Then a shift key and cursor movement keys 101-104 are operated to move and change the size so that a part to be registered in the picture (a) displayed with the frame (c) is encircled; and then the execution key is pressed, so that the picture data encircled with the frame is converted to the specified character size. Then an external character code is designated and then the picture is registered in a character generator with the designated external character code.
