PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of a magneto-optical recording element and to prolong the life thereof by projecting UV rays in an inert gaseous atmosphere or vacuum to the film forming surface of a plastic substrate. CONSTITUTION:This recording element is constituted by laminating the magnetic layer 3 via a 1st nonmagnetic layer 2 on the plastic substrate 1 and laminating a 2nd nonmagnetic layer 4 and a protective layer 5 successively thereon. The substrate 1 is formed of a polycarbonate resin or the like and the UV rays of 200-280nm wavelength are projected in the inert gas of Ar or the like or vacuum to the film forming surface 1a. The constituting chain polymers of the forming surface 1a are bonded to each other by a covalent bond to form the reformed plastic layer 1b. The adhesive power of the nonmagnetic material layers 2, 4 is thereby improved by which the magneto-optical recording element having the high reliability and the long life is obtd.
