PURPOSE:To improve the operability of a magnetic recording and reproducing device, by incorporating an adaptor for mounting a small-sized tape cassette and moving the adaptor in the section between the location where the adaptor is mounted on a tape driving device and a location where the adaptor does not interfere with the moving path of a standard type tape cassette. CONSTITUTION:When a standard type tape cassette is inserted into a device 1 from an inserting port 3 and a tape cassette holder 8 is pressed, a sliding arm 21 turns counterclockwise and the standard tape cassette 25 is loaded on a tape driving device. Then, an adaptor 7 which is integrated with an adaptor holder 6 is situated at a position where the adaptor 7 does not interfere with the loading path of the tape cassette 25. When a small-sized tape cassette is loaded, the tape cassette is mounted on the adaptor 7 through an inserting port 4 and a sliding arm 15 is turned counterclockwise. Then the adaptor 7 is mounted on the tape driving device. Since it is not required to move the adaptor to the outside of the device 1, not only the operability of the device 1, but also the maintenance ability of the device 1 are improved.
