Novel alkali metal diaryl phosphides of the general formula R7R8PM, wherein M represents an alkali metal, R7 is an aryl group having one or more polar substituents at least one of which occupies an ortho position in respect of the phosphorus atom and R8 represents an aryl group which contains no polar substituents occupying an ortho position in respect of the phosphorus atom.
