A 335 residue polypeptide (structure given) with DNA synthetase activity, but not nuclease activity is new, and is obtd. by cloning DNA coding for DNA polymerase of animal cell origin, incorporating with a suitable vector into a plasmid, using the plasmid to form a transformant of a host such as E.coli and culturing the organism to express the polypeptide. Also claimed are the DNA coding for the DNA polymerase of animal cell origin (1008 bases; structure given); plasmids incorporating this DNA (specifically, plasmid pUC 118); and transformant organisms incorporating the plasmid (esp. E.coli JMpBeta5; FERM BP-1582).
