<p>A high strength, ultra high modulus carbon fiber is made from a carbonaceous pitch containing an optically anisotropic phase which was heated and centrifuged to enrich the content of the said anisotropic phase and the resulting enriched pitch was spun in a melt spinning machine into a carbon fiber which was thereafter infusibilized by heating in an oxygen-rich or oxidising atmosphere at a temperature of at least 2,400 DEG C. The fiber is characterized by the presence of the (112) cross-lattice line and the resolution of the diffraction band into two distinct lines (100) and (101), which indicate the three-dimensional order of the crystallite of the fiber. It has an interlayer spacing (d002) of 0.3371 to 0.340 nm (3.371 to 3.40 ANGSTROM ); a stack height (Lc002) of 15 to 50 nm (150 to 500 ANGSTROM ); and a layer size (La110) of 15 to 80 nm (150 to 800 ANGSTROM ).</p> |
