PURPOSE:To decrease the connection loss of a light guide and optical fiber by adopting the constitution in which grooves to increase the distance from the light guide gradually from one end face toward the center on both sides of the light guide on a substrate surface. CONSTITUTION:The grooves 3 provided on both sides of the light guide 2 on the substrate 1 surface are so disposed as to be most proximate to the guide 2 on the end face 11 side of the substrate and to part gradually from the guide the furtherer from the end face. Transverse confinement of the light propagating in the guide is thereby intensified and since the guide is circular near the end face and becomes gradually elliptical the furtherer from the end face, the mode changes gently as the light propagates in the guide and the loss in the connection of the light guide and the optical fiber is decreased. |
