PURPOSE:To greatly extend the life of a photosensitive body by electrostatically charging the surface of said body in such a manner that the surface of the photosensitive body after the charge has <=3X10<5>V/cm electric field intensity. CONSTITUTION:The photosensitive body 1 having a photosensitive layer formed by coating an electric charge transfer layer consisting of an alpha-phenyl stilbene compd. or the like on an under coating layer of an electric charge generating layer consisting of an azo pigment or the like to separate functions to both layers is used and the surface of this photosensitive body is so electrostatically charged that said surface has <=3X10<5>V/cm electric field intensity, then ensuing operations such as image exposing, developing, transferring and cleaning are carried out. The photosensitive body 1 is thereby provided with the life higher by >=2 times than the life when the photosensitive body operates on the charge above this electric field intensity. The dependency on the electric field intensity after the charge is admitted in the increase of a potential V2 after exposing at the time of repeatedly using the photosensitive body 1 formed by using an electrolytic conductive polymer to the under coating layer and,therefore, the life of the photosensitive body is prolonged by positively utilizing said dependency.
