PURPOSE:To eliminate a failure in retrieval by displaying a retrieval picture more finely at each time of selection to find a difference between pictures even in the case of existence of pictures resembling each other. CONSTITUTION:The most rough compressed picture is reproduced from the storage area of a first hierarchy and many pictures 13 are displayed on one screen to perform rough retrieval, and data in the area of a second hierarchy of the retrieved picture is next reproduced and is added to the reproduced value of the first hierarchy, and a finer compressed picture is reproduced to display a smaller number of pictures 14 on one screen and retrieval is performed. Data in the area of the i-th hierarchy is reproduced similarly hereafter and is added to the addition value of reproduced data of first (i-1)th hierarchies, and the retrieval picture is displayed more finely to reduce the number of selection candidate pictures, thus eliminating a failure in retrieval between pictures resembling each other.
