PURPOSE:To shorten a processing time as a whole, by supplying a value based on a distortion measure between reference vectors as a scalar quantity in addition to two reference vectors to decide a direction to be branched to the node of a binary tree, and deciding branch to a reference vector side on one side. CONSTITUTION:Assuming that a leftward reference vector TL is set as TL=14 and a rightward reference vector TR as TR=6, the distortion measure dLR between those reference vectors is expressed as dLR=(TL-TR)<2>=(14-6)=8<2>=64. Therefore, the scalar quantity goes to dLR/4=16. In such a way, it is compared with the dLR/4, and if a condition dL<dLR<4 is satisfied, the branch to the leftward reference vector TL side performed, and it is not required to calculate the distortion measure with the rightward reference vector TR.
