PURPOSE:To enable a multicolor display to be performed by forming a luminous layer through laminating at least two or more luminous layers, which display different luminescent colors, and have a film thickness corresponding to the wavelength of a high frequency voltage respectively, and then applying high frequency voltages in different wavelengthes selectively. CONSTITUTION:On a transference electrode 5 is provided a luminous layer 6 having a film thickness of l1 by using the powders of fluorescent materials, to which an active material, such as Ag or the like, is added, and using an appropriate method. As a luminous layer 7, the powder of fluorescent materials, to which an active material, such as Cu, Cl, are formed in the same manner to a film thickness of l2, and further, the layer 6 is formed in a film thickness of l1. As a back plate 8, Al or the like is formed by using a vacuum deposition method and the like, so that a dispersion type EL display element is obtained. Between the electrodes 5, 8 are connected in parallel, by means of a change-over switch 9, a high frequency voltage generating device 10 for an operating frequency of f1 forming a standing wave A and a generating device 11 for an operating frequency of f1 forming a standing wave B, and then, by using the switch 9, either one of the two high frequency voltages is applied selectively to the element. Thereby, a multicolor display can be performed.
