PURPOSE:To enable effective coupling or interaction between an optical wave and the guided light of an optical waveguide by forming a recessed part in one area on a substrate where the guided light and the optical wave other than the guided light cross each other and making the substrate opaque to the optical wave other than the guided light in case of interaction between the guided light and the optical wave other than the guided light. CONSTITUTION:An optical waveguide 3 is provided on a substrate 1, and a recessed part 28 is formed in one area on the substrate where guided light beams 22 and 23 of the optical waveguide 3 and optical waves 24 and 25 other than the guided light cross each other, and the substrate 1 is set to an opaque state 21 to optical waves 24 and 25 other than the guided light in case of interaction between guided light beams 22 and 23 and optical waves 24 and 25 other than the guided light. Since the recessed part 28 is formed in one part of the substrate 1, the optical loss of the substrate 1 which is absorbent of or opaque to optical waves other than the guided light is eliminated to enable coupling between an input light 25 and an output light 27 of the substrate. Thus, the number of degrees of freedom of coupling between the guided light and the light other than the guided light, for example, an external input/ output light is increased to obtain an optical waveguide device of high performance as an optical coupler and an optical logic element. |
