PURPOSE:To contrive the improvement of contrast, to execute a gradation display, and to extend a display pattern, etc., by laminating liquid crystal layers which can be driven separately, in a multi-layer. CONSTITUTION:The titled display element consists of a multi-layer structure in which two liquid crystal layers 4, 8 are laminated upward and downward by pinching glass 6 and transparent electrodes 5, 7, and a transparent electrode 9, glass 10 and a polarizing plate 11 are laminated on the lower part of the liquid crystal layer 8 of the lower layer, and a transparent electrode 3, glass 2 and a polarizing plate 1 are laminated on the upper part of the liquid crystal layer 4 of the upper layer. That is, by constituting two liquid crystal layers 4, 8, of liquid crystals whose orientation characteristics are different, respectively, a transmission light B is different when a plane of polarization has been varied by the liquid crystal layer 4, and when the plane of polarization has been varied by the liquid crystal layer 8, and the difference is generated in the contrast. By utilizing the foregoing, a gradation display, a registration display, etc., can be executed.
