PURPOSE:To improve the degree of freedom of a pagination by adding and printing a page number to a designated confined position by a paginating character designated by a character format designating means. CONSTITUTION:When a printing instruction is given from an input device 1, a page number printing data generating function part 46 inputs paginating information from a paginating information area of a document data store area 44 and generates a page number printing data, stores it in an area of the first page of a printing data store area 48, and brings a page counter 47 to an increment. The page counter 47 counts a store page of the printing data store area 48 by information of the page number printing data generation function part 46. Subsequently, the printing data store area 48 receives not only a document data to be printed but also a page number printing data to be added to its page from the page number printing data generating function part 46, and stores it in the page area concerned. In such a way, at the time of setting a format, a position for inputting a page number, and a format are set, and at the time of generating a document, a text of its part is eliminated, and at the time of printing, the page number is printed automatically.
