PURPOSE:To accurately discriminate the recording form of a picture information signal recorded on a recording medium, by performing error detection assuming the picture information signal reproduced from the recording medium as a digital signal, and judging the recording form as an analog recording form when errors exceeding a prescribed number are included. CONSTITUTION:An analog-digital discrimination circuit discriminates wether or not it is the digital signal by counting the number of times of the delivery of an error flag from an error detection and correction circuit 22B included in a reproducing digital signal processor. In other words, the error correction and detection circuit 22B outputs the error flag at every detection of an error. A counter 70 counts the number of the error flags. A comparator 72 compares the count value of the counter 70 with an N(threshold value) and when the count value is larger than the N, it is judged that analog recording is performed, and in other cases, it is judged as digital recording.
