PURPOSE:To prevent a sensor head from breaking and to carry on profile measuring operation by taking a measurement only through the rotation of the rotary shaft of a measuring instrument main body when a sensor head and a body to be measured interfere with each other. CONSTITUTION:The stand-off distance of the sensor head 2 and a specific angle thetaE are set previously in a measurement arithmetic part 40. When a narrow-place measurement start command is inputted from an NC control part 30 by operating a console panel 60, the arithmetic part 40 rotates the rotary shaft 3 of the measuring instrument main body 10 in the moving direction of the head 2 to make a decision 42 on whether or not a measurement point is within a measurement range, and when so, a target position arithmetic processing means 46 calculates a target position W1, so that the measurement point is moved to outside the measurement range of the head 2. Then the shaft 3 is rotated up to the angle thetaE, a decision 45 on whether or not the head 2 and body T to be measured interfere with each other is made, and when so, the head 2 is moved to a corrected target position. Then the shaft 3 is rotated until continuous data on a next point P is obtained, the coordinates of the point P during the rotation is stored, and the measurement is carried on.
