PURPOSE:To lighten the speed change shock by varying the control timing for an engine in the direction for lightening the speed change shock during the time from the time when the variation rate of the engine revolution speed varies over a prescribed value to the time of lapse of a prescribe time, after an automatic transmission control means outputs a speed change selection signal. CONSTITUTION:During the operation of a vehicle, it is judged by a computer 3 for controlling an internal combustion engine if the state of an automatic transmission 2 at present is in down-shift or not, and when the down shift in which speed change shock is generated is judged, the variation rate is calculated from the engine revolution speed obtained by an engine revolution sensor 5. Then, it is judged if the variation rate is larger than a prescribed value or not, and if the judgement is 'YES', delayed setting is performed, and a delayed angle signal for delaying the ignition timing of an internal combustion engine 1 is outputted. Therefore, the output of the internal combustion engine 1 is reduced, and when the automatic transmission 2 actually sifts to the speed change operation, the shock due to the engagement of the ember in the automatic transmission 2 is lightened.
