PURPOSE:To produce the title copolymer improved in organic solvent solubility, free of shrinkage during polymerization and useful as a water and/oil repellent, a mold release or the like, by polymerizing a fluorinated spiroortho ester by ring opening in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The title copolymer wherein ether moieties and ester moieties having structural units of formula II and III are polymerized in a 1:1 ratio can be obtained by polymerizing a fluorinated spiroortho ester of formula I (where RF is a 1-21C polyfluoro alkyl) by ring opening in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst. This copolymer posseses an improved solubility in various organic solvents, has feature of being nonshirinking during polymerization and is useful as an electronic or optical material such as a sealing resin or an adhesive as well as a surface modifier such as a water and/oil repellent, a mold release and a peeling agent. The spiroortho ester of formula I can be obtained by reacting a fluorinated epoxide of formula IV with a cyclic ester of formula V [wherein A is a 1-10C (substituted) alkylene] in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst.
