PURPOSE:To detect the error location in a CDUI by outputting a page with RDPBN returned thereto after a function of an output device of a transmission side terminal equipment coincident with that of the reception side terminal equipment when the RDBPN is returned. CONSTITUTION:A transmission side sets control information to realize the function of an opposite terminal equipment to a storage section 15 for control section of opposite terminal equipment, starts document transfer afterward and transmits a CDE at the end of document and completes the session when the RDEP is returned from the opposite party. When the RDPBN is returned, the control section 4 detects the error location of the protocol element of the page with the RDPBN returned thereto by using control information set to the storage section 15 for the control section for opposite terminal equipment so as to make the function of a document output section 12 coincident with that of the opposite terminal equipment. Thus, when the RDPBN is returned from the opposite terminal equipment, the error location in the protocol element is detected.
