The present invention relates to an automatic chronometer intended to be used for measuring the performance of swimmers without the intervention of a third party. This chronometer 1 is placed on a curbstone 2 above the wall 3 of a swimming pool. It can be used by the swimmer alone (positioned at A) through automatic triggering by the cutting of the infrared beam 4. The countdown in time is displayed on the displays 5 and 6. After having made an out and back journey the displays 7 and 8 will indicate 01 at the instant of the cutting of the infrared beam 9 situated below the surface of the water 10. The tubular arms 11 and 12 contain diodes and lenses 13. Several switches: start/stop 14, reset to zero 15, display of the last pass 17, allow some control of the device and the light-emitting diode 16 indicates the presence of the infrared signal. CMOS electronics in the apparatus allow optimal exploitation of all the possibilities of the invention. <IMAGE>
