The device comprises means (8) for bringing and directing a beam of incident light into the fluid, said incident light being at least partly retrodiffused by the solid particles in suspension, means (11) for collecting the partly retrodiffused light, and means (5, 6, 7, 12, 13) for measuring the quantity of retrodiffused light in order to deduct from the quantity in particular the concentration of particles suspended in said fluid. The device can be applied in particular to measure the density of a fluid present in a drilling shaft.
