PURPOSE:To cleave an RNA and produce the aimed RNA having a desired base pair fraction, by irradiating the backbone chain of the above-mentioned RNA with laser beams at a wavelength equal to an absorption wavelength characteristic of a base pair A-U or G-C which is a constituent element of the RNA. CONSTITUTION:The backbone of an RNA containing G-C pairs present therein is irradiated with laser beams synchronized with the ultraviolet ray absorption wavelength 290nm of the G-C pairs and cleaved into a form of the above- mentioned RNA in which the G-C pairs form a population to readily cleave the central part hardly affected by A-U pairs and the G-C pairs are selectively cleaved. Selective cleavage of the A-U pairs can be similarly carried out by irradiation with laser beams and an RNA having a desired A-U/G-C fraction is produced. A system containing high-frequency conversion elements in combination, such as excimer laser, coloring matter laser or KDP, is preferred as a system for obtaining the laser beams.
