PURPOSE:To obtain a polysulfone of a high degree of polymerization and excellent heat resistance in good yileds, by solution-polycondensing a bisphenolfluorene with an alkali and a dichlorodiphenyl sulfone at a specified ratio in the absence of water. CONSTITUTION:A bisphenolfluorene (A) which is 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene of the formula (wherein R<1-2> are each H, CH3 or C2H5), obtained from a fluorene and a phenol is mixed with 0.995-1.005g. equivalent, per g. equivalent of component A, of an aqueous alkali solution (B) (e.g., aqueous NaOH solution) and a solvent (C) (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide); an azeotropic agent (e.g., toluene) is added to the above mixture, this mixture is azeotropically distilled to remove the water; a dehydrating agent (e.g., CaH2) is added to the mixture to remove the water nearly completely from the reaction system, and 0.995-1.00g. equivalent, per g. equivalent of component A, of dichlorodiphenyl sulfone is added to this reaction system, and the resulting mixture is subjected to solution polycondensation.
