PURPOSE:To use a reader as the reading part of a reader/printer which is used for many purposes and is highly economical, by providing a second carrying path which is branched from a first carrying path to carry a medium in a different direction and coupling the aperture part at the terminal of the second carrying path to another device. CONSTITUTION:The first medium carrying path 3 connected to a first aperture part 1 for medium insertion and ejection and a second carrying path 24 which is branched from the first carrying path 3 to carry the medium in a different direction are provided, and an optical read station 6 is provided between the first aperture part 1 and a branch point 11a between first and second carrying paths 3 and 24. An aperture part 24a at the terminal of the second carrying path 24 is so constituted that it can be coupled to another device. Thus, this reader is not only provided with the optical reading function as the fundamental function of reader but also is easily coupled to another printer on demand to constitute a reader/printer. Further, it is possible to print characters for certification just after optical read operation or to perform optical read for confirmation after printing of characters on a bankbook or the like.
