The invention is constituted by a drum 6 of generally rectangular cross-section whose length is at least twice the greatest transverse dimension. The drum is slightly inclined to the horizontal and its lower surface 2 is internally covered with a coating 12 capable of stopping and retaining the heavy particles. During washing, the sand passes through the drum from one end to the other and the heavy ore particles are retained in the coating 12 of the lower wall 2. At suitable intervals, the drum is turned through 180 DEG about its axis and the surface 2 lies at the top; its coating 12 is then cleaned by the jets of a spray boom (rail) 7 which is also the rotation shaft of the drum. The products from the cleaning gather on a partition wall 15 and are discharged by gravity to the lower end 10 of this partition wall, and then the drum undergoes a reverse rotation which brings the wall 12 back into the low position. The invention applies in particular to the enriching of gold dispersed in sand. <IMAGE>
