The decanter is of the type comprising a bowl 1 having a horizontal axis and a discharge screw 5, a solid-phase outlet 3 and a weir-type liquid-phase outlet 8 at the two ends of the bowl, the suspension to be treated being injected via the shaft of the said discharge screw 5, the said decanter being characterised in that the bowl 1 is formed by two frustoconical parts 1a, 1b joined by their larger diameter, in that the screw 5 has a frustoconical general shape and extends solely in that one 1a of the two frustoconical parts, the free end of which includes the said solid-phase outlet 3 and in that the suspension is injected via one or more orifices 9 made in the shaft of the screw 5 in the vicinity of the zone of maximum diameter of the bowl.
