The present invention relates to a device making it possible to absorb gravity waves propagating in a fluid 5 towards an obstacle 4. The device comprises, in combination, immersed in the fluid: - a first means 1, permeable to the fluid, for dissipating the energy of the incident wave, consisting of dissipating ducts which are open at their ends 6, which is arranged facing the wave front to be absorbed, - a second means 3 which stiffens the device, which consists of two U-tube halves, and is situated between the first means and the obstacle, - a third means consisting of the mass of the fluid flowing inside the first and second means, and providing inertial effects. Application to the absorption of swell and surface waves, for example at sea or in hydrodynamic test tanks. <IMAGE>
