PURPOSE:To form stably a large sized liquid crystal element having a chiral smectic C phase causing no disturbance in orientation nor zigzag defect by cooling slowly a display element contg. ferroelectric liquid crystals sealed therein and dipped in a liquid by cooling the liquid while dipping the element in the liquid. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell consisting of an 8 inch square glass substrate 403, and 409 having picture element electrodes 404, 408 formed thereon is held at 120 deg.C in a heating oven, and the cell is cooled to room temp. after sealing a ferroelectric liquid crystal CS1011 or CS1014 (produced by CHISSO K.K.) therein. After dipping the element in a circulating thermostat contg. water as heating medium, elevating the temp. of the thermostat to 95 deg.C at 1 deg.C/min heating rate, then allowing to stand for about 10min to maintain isotropic phase, the element is cooled slowly to 25 deg.C at 0.1 deg.C/min cooling rate. As a result, a large sized display element having a chiral smectic C phase causing no disturbance in the orientation nor zigzag defect is formed in a short time and with satisfactory reproducibility. |
