PURPOSE:To enable fuel to increase longer its staying time around an intake valve or the like by utilizing a flow of blow back of intake when an engine is in high load operation or the like, by controlling the injection timing of a fuel injection valve in the latter period of an intake stroke when the engine generates a small swirl of the intake. CONSTITUTION:A controller 23 controls the injection timing of a fuel injection valve 15 in the intermediate period of an intake stroke, when a swirl of intake increases larger, and in the latter period of the intake stroke when the swirl of intake decreases smaller. Accordingly, an engine, when it is in low load operation, generates a large swirl of intake, promoting the mixing of a mixture while injecting fuel in the intermediate period of the intake stroke, thus the engine, which forms the mixture in a good layer, enables combustibility to be improved by stratified combustion. While the engine, reducing suction resistance, because a swirl control valve 12 opens when the engine is in high load operation, while injecting the fuel in the latter period of the intake stroke, promotes the vaporization and atomization of fuel by utilizing a flow of blow back of the intake, and the engine 1 improves its output performance.
