PURPOSE:To enhance reliability of detecting a misfire and to prevent a catalyst from deteriorating, by detecting the misfire by two flip flop circuits, which are synchronized with ignition timing and crank angle signals, and stopping the injection of fuel to a cylinder generating the misfire. CONSTITUTION:Signals from a cylinder discriminating sensor 16, crank angle sensor 17 and a misfire detecting means 15 are input to a control unit 2, and the control unit 2, when it detects a misfire, ceases the injection of fuel by stopping a driving signal to a fuel injection valve driving coil 3 in a cylinder generating the misfire. The misfire detecting means 15 is constituted connecting a flip flop circuit 15b, synchronously inverted with a crank angle signal, to a flip flop circuit 15a synchronously inverted with an ignition timing signal. In this way, an engine, surely detecting the misfire, enables the deterioration of a catalyst to be prevented.
