PURPOSE:To accelerate the copying of a magnetic disk with especially low activity efficiency, by providing a nonuse area detecting mechanism which generates a nonuse area information file from a vacant area information file in the magnetic disk and a copying decision mechanism which decides a range to be copied, and discontinuing the copying of a nonuse area. CONSTITUTION:The nonuse area detecting mechanism 11 included in a copying machine 10 generates a nonuse area information table 13 based on a physical unit at the time of copying from the vacant area information file 21 of an input side magnetic disk 20a. A copying mechanism 12 performs the copying of the input side disk 20a to an output side disk 20b based on the decided result of the copying range by referring to the nonuse area information table 13 by the copying decision mechanism 14. In such a way, the wasteful copying of the nonuse area can be prevented from being performed, and especially, the copying at the time of copying an area where a few space is used can be accelerated.
