To ensure the quality of rivet connections which are made mechanically by means of a snap die, the snap die (5) is moved out of a predetermined zero position, with a measuring force lying below the force necessary for the deformation of the rivet (19), towards the workpiece (20) until it rests against the rivet (19) or against the workpiece (20). On completion of the advance brought about by the measuring force, the advance of the snap die (5) during this is measured and compared with a set value. In the event of an actual value lying within the admissible tolerance, the pressure exerted on the snap die (5) is increased to the value necessary for the riveting process. In the event of an actual value lying outside the admissible tolerance but within possible length values of the rivets, the insertion of a rivet is brought about in the case of a rivet missing and the insertion of a new snap die in the case of snap die breakage. <IMAGE>
