PURPOSE:To automatically detect a package in which different kinds of yarns are stored in a mixed condition, by irradiating ultraviolet rays to the outer surface of a yarn layer in a package, and by analyzing a data signal which is obtained by receiving luminescence emitted from the outer surface of the yarn layer that absorbs ultraviolet rays. CONSTITUTION:A package P supported on a tray is introduced into a dark room and is rotated after positioning, and ultraviolet rays L are irradiated onto the outer surface Pa of the package P from a fluorescent lamp. Yarns which absorbs the ultraviolet rays produces luminescence L1 which enters into a sensor 25 through a reflector 22, an optical filter 23 and a lens 24, and is therefore subjected to electro-optical conversion and is then delivered to a data analyzer 30. In the analyzer 30, a signal is transmitted through a gain adjusting circuit 31 and an A/D converter 32, and noise components are removed from the signal by a data processing section 33. A judging section 35 compares a variation in the level of the input signal with a set value by a setting unit 34, and if there is a variation exceeding the set value, a signal indicating the presence of a package having an abnormality in mixture of different kinds of yarns is delivered from an output 36, and accordingly, an alarm is issued.
