PURPOSE:To enable document images with color designation to be outputted with favorable discriminability irrespective of the color of a paper, by reversing document image data inputted with color designation, and expanding background color data assigned a background color and the document image data respectively into different page memories under control. CONSTITUTION:When document image data with color designation is inputted, a CPU 4 so functions that the document image data is expanded into either one of a first output page buffer 7a and a second output page buffer 7b capable of reproducing the relevant color, whereas background image data obtained by reversing the document image data is expanded into the other output page buffer. When a background-canceling command is inputted from a panel 10, the reversion of the document image data for forming the background image data is stopped. Thus, for example, a shaded part is developed in a background color of black, while character patterns with color designation of yellow are developed in yellow, on the same paper, whereby images discriminable as the character patterns with favorable discriminability can be printed.
