PURPOSE:Heat-resistant inorg. porous composition useful as carrier for catalyst having a very large specific surface area in a high temp. which is a composition in a specified proportion of SiO2 and Al2O3 and of which components after calcining are substantially theta-alumina and mullite. CONSTITUTION:The heat-resisting inorg. porous composition consists of SiO2 and Al2O3, the content of SiO2 being 2-30wt.%, is obtd. by calcining at 1,000-1,200 deg.C in air, contains substantially theta-alumina and mullite, and has >=20m<2>/g specific surface area. When the porous composition above-mentioned is used as carrier for catalyst, it increases catalytic ability as it can carry catalytic metal in a state of well dispersion, because of its porosity. Besides, although the catalyst is used for a long time in a high temp., the porous composition retains the well dispersion and does not decrease the catalytic ability as it maintains the large specific surface area.
