If the chilled surface area of a piston ring of this kind is formed by a continuously produced remelted layer, stress cracking can occur, especially at the transition from the melting zone to the edge zone not subjected to remelting. It is here that the invention is intended to provide a remedy. To avoid the stress cracks described, the chilled area (ledeburite structure) is divided into separate adjacent zones. The individual zones are elliptical in shape and the principal axes of the ellipses are aligned at an acute angle to the axis of the piston ring.
