In the manufacture of an elongate product by drying a solvent-containing layer by means of hot air guided in a circuit, the energy which is used for waste-gas cleaning, with the effect of eliminating the solvent contained in the hot air, is to be utilised as optimally as possible. To this end, of the hot air quantity (2) guided through a retort (1), only a subquantity (9) is subjected to waste-gas cleaning. Furthermore, the connecting (7, 13) of energy, used for the waste-gas cleaning, into the hot air circuit takes place outside the drying zone or the retort (1). <IMAGE>
