The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polymerisable monomers of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R' is H or methyl, R'' is an optionally branched alkylene group having 2 or 5 C atoms, n is an integer from 1 to 10, M is a metal ion, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ion, an ammonium ion or a quaternary ammonium ion and Z is an integer which is equal to the valency of M, where for n > 1 the alkylene groups can be identical or different, by reaction of a hydroxy-functional (meth)acrylamide derivative of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R and R'' have the meaning indicated above, with a sulphating agent, in which (meth)acrylamide compound and optionally also the sulphating agent are reacted dissolved in a chemically inert organic solvent. The reaction product obtained is optionally neutralised.
