Azo cpds. of formula (I) are new: X=H or halogen; m=1-4; R1= opt. substd. phenylene, biphenylylene or naphthylene; n=1 or 2; R2=opt. substd. phenyl, biphenylyl or naphthyl when n=1, or opt. substd. phenylene, biphenylene or naphthylene when n=2; Y is a gp. forming a benzocarbazole ring. - More specifically (I) are of formula (Ia); Z=H or halogen; p= 1-4, R'1=phenylene or biphenylene opt. substd. by halogen, Me, OMe, OEt and/or NO2; R'2=phenyl, phenylene or biphenylylene opt. substd. by halogen, Me, OMe, OEt, NO2, acetylamino and/or benzoylamino.
