PURPOSE:To detect the existence of a workpiece easily with no adjustment in no relation to a kind of the workpiece and its size, by actuating a fluid cylinder while advancing a movable vice jaw to clamp the workpiece and detecting a cylinder internal pressure in the preset time. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 105, which actuates a solenoid SOL2 of a solenoid hydraulic selector valve 73 connecting a port P with a port B, supplies pressure oil from an oil hydraulic pump 81 to a chamber 63 of a hydraulic cylinder 41 via an oil pipe 67, moving a movable vice jaw 39 to the right simultaneously actuating a timer 107. When a pressure switch 103, connected halfway the oil pipe 67, reaches the preset pressure or more in the preset time, a workpiece W is detected existing between the movable vice jaw 39 and a fixed vice jaw 37. While after the preset time, when the pressure switch 103 reaches no predetermined pressure or more in the preset time of the timer 107, the workpiece W is detected not existing.
