Silicon nitride powder is prepared by reacting silicon tetrachloride dissolved in an inert solvent, with gaseous ammonia, and the siliconimide formed is converted into silicon nitride by thermal treatment at from 800 to 1600 DEG C, if desired after prior removal of the ammonium chloride formed at the same time. During the reaction of the silicon tetrachloride with ammonia, the reaction mixture is removed continuously from the reaction zone, liquid and the resulting solids, essentially consisting of siliconimide and ammonium chloride, are separated from one another, and the liquid removed is recycled to the reaction zone.
