PURPOSE:To use a signal processing circuit in common for a magnetic recording and reproducing device having a different cylinder diameter by deciding the difference of recording/reproducing modes due to the difference of cylinder diameters or the like, controlling the control timing of sequence control and adopting a periodical and regular control method. CONSTITUTION:The processing of a data bus is executed at 4.704MHz e.g. and priority order is applied to the recording or reproducing to/from a magnetic head 8, code error correcting encoding or decoding processing and the writing/ reading of A/D or D/A conversion processing data in/from a memory 3. In addition, the device is provided with the memory 3, an address generator 4, a code error correcting processor 5, a sequence controller 18, a timing generator 19, a digital modulator 6, a digital demodulator 12, and a recording/reproducing mode discriminator 20 for discriminating the difference of modes due to the difference of cylinder diameters or the like so that the same processing and control can be executed even if cylinder diameters especially are different. Consequently, a system having a different cylinder diameter and a different transfer rate to a recording/reproducing medium can be also allowed to correspond by a memory and a common signal processing sequence.
