PURPOSE:To satisfactorily reproduce an original image, by providing a circuit identifying the usable one between two types of original images on the basis of processed information. CONSTITUTION:An image discriminating circuit successively divides R, G, R signals for the amount of one or several samplings inputted in order from a color image sensor 2a through an A, D conversion circuit and a shading correction circuit into signal groups by every unit of a B, G, R filter and by every nE part made of continuous Es, thereafter calculating for every signal group a ratio Sm/n of the number Sm of B, G, R signals in the range of intermediate density and a ratio Sd/n of the number Sd of the signals over the range of the intermediate density to the number (n) of B, G, R signals. In the case that the Sn/d is not less than a fixed value Ld and the Sm/n is less than a fixed value Lm, the discriminated area of an original image is judged to be a gradation image to be reproduced with a four-color mode ; in the other case, it is judged to be with a three-color mode. In this manner, a gradation image can be satisfactorily reproduced without incompatibility over a range from soft gradation images to such images as gradation images including characters. |
