Carbon-containing fly ash is mixed into sewer sludge to improve its calorific content and thus make the addition of fuel oil unnecessary. If the fly ash is added to the sludge prior to the filtration, one further achieves an improvement of its porosity and thus a better drying of the sludge prior to the incineration, since the drying occurs by bringing the sludge in countercurrent to the smoke gases from the incineration.
