Containers (2) are delivered by a first conveyor (7) to a stacking machine (4). This machine consists of a frame (4') which supports an endless chain vertical conveyor (5) which has gripping devices (6) attached to the chain. These grippers take a container (2) from the first conveyor and deliver it to the second conveyor (8) at the height required to place it on the stack (3). The machine is controlled by photo-electric cells (10, 11, 12) which enable the stack (3) to be removed when it has reached the required height. The machine can work equally well in the reverse direction by transferring containers from the stack to the conveyor (7). USE - Material handling.
